El intento de sentir responde a la pregunta: ¿Cómo es que el lugar en donde estamos nos afecta en lo que somos y en lo que hacemos?
Estas piezas son registros de dos ciudades superpuestas. Una manifestación física de las consideraciones y ajustes que hacemos cuando pertenecemos a diferentes geografías.
El trabajo comenzó en Brooklyn, imprimiendo fotografías en pequeños formatos y pintando directamente sobre pedazos de tela que, dobladas o enrolladas, cupieran en mi maleta. Estas futuras piezas debían de ser flexibles e inconclusas, capaces de adaptarse a la realidad práctica de viajar, pero también, de capturar la experiencia de estar en la Ciudad de México.
Una vez aquí, las obras se transformaron en algo inesperado: las pinturas - sin estirar y recortadas - ahora flotan en cajas de madera, revelando sus cualidades de imagen como también de objeto, y al mismo tiempo documentan, en el contorno de un cuerpo, las sensaciones y experiencias que trae un cambio de locación. Las marcas intercaladas en las fotografías registran la densidad sonora característica de las ciudades mexicanas.
Estos objetos intentan traducir pictóricamente la sensación de tener un cuerpo. Mi cuerpo, y la manera en que me conecto con el mundo está presente en la redondez de las formas y la suavidad de los gestos. Aparece entre los bordes de color, sólo para desaparecer en degradaciones cromáticas y patrones visuales. Las formas y contornos de las pinturas son una sugerencia permeable y abierta a múltiples interpretaciones. Mientras que las plantas y las flores en las obras escultóricas son signos del tiempo y de sus efectos, como la pérdida de color y las formas que se marchitan.
El intento de sentir reúne objetos, cuerpos y plantas. La velocidad a la que cada uno va cambiando, resalta la fragilidad del momento, al mismo tiempo que revela nuestro deseo por la permanencia y la documentación.

Mariana Garibay Raeke es una artista multidisciplinaria que trabaja con una variedad de medios que incluyen instalación, dibujo, pintura, escultura y fotografía. Su trabajo examina ideas de transformación a través de exploraciones materiales guiadas por procesos y lugares. Le interesa realizar obras que capturen la naturaleza efímera de la experiencia y cuestionen nuestra comprensión de las imágenes, los objetos y los cuerpos.
Nació en Guadalajara y radica entre México y Brooklyn, Garibay Raeke tiene un BFA del California College of the Arts y un MFA de Yale University School of Art.
Exposiciones recientes incluyen “Where the threads are worn”, Casey Kaplan, NY; “Between object and image”, Marcia Wood Gallery, Atlanta; “To the Center and Back / Al Centro y de Regreso”, La Señora, Oaxaca; “closing the space between us”, The Chimney, Brooklyn. The attempt of felling responds to a question: how does where we are affect who we are and how we make?
These pieces are records of two cities overlapping in a single object - a physical manifestation of the considerations and adjustments that we make when we belong to different geographies.
I started these works in my Brooklyn studio, printing photographs onto small pieces of paper and working on raw canvas so that I could fold them and fit everything into my suitcase. These future works needed to be open and flexible to accommodate the realities of travel and capture the experience of being in Mexico City.
While in Mexico, the works changed into something unexpected: The paintings - unstretched and cutout - now hang in wooden boxes, revealing their image and object qualities, while documenting in the outline of a body the sensations and experiences that a change of place can bring. The marks and patterns layered over the photographs are a record of the dense sounds characteristic of mexican cities.
These objects are an attempt to translate the feeling of having a body into painting. My body is present in the roundness of the shapes, and the softest of the gesture. It appears in between the edges of color only to disappear into chromatic gradients and visual patterns.
The shapes and outlines of the paintings are a suggestion - permeable and open to multiple interpretations. The plants and flowers in the sculptural works are signs of time in their fading colors and withering forms.
The attempt of feeling brings together objects, bodies, and plants. The velocity at which each of them is changing highlights the fragility of the moment while at the same time revealing our collective desire for documentation and permanence.

Mariana Garibay Raeke is a multidisciplinary artist working with a range of media that includes installation, drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography. Her work examines ideas of transformation through material explorations guided by process and place. She is interested in making works that capture the ephemeral nature of experience and question our understanding of images, objects, and bodies.
Born in Guadalajara and based between Mexico and  Brooklyn, Garibay Raeke holds a BFA from the California College of the Arts and an MFA from Yale University School of Art.
